laurathelurker - Are you a pet person, how many have you had over the years and which was your favorite?

I'm a dog person, I think rather than a pet person.
We lived on a small holding when I was growing up and had goats, pigs, cows, horses, ducks, chickens, rabbits, cats, guinea pigs and a couple of iguanas at one point. Most of the animals were "eating animals" but we still gave them names and were taught that they should be always treated with respect and kindness coz eventually they would feed us. Also a happy pig is a tasty pig, and my piggers were so happy : ) But they were really pets. Also, I'm allerigic to everything so I would avoid most furry stuff (piggers excluded : )
My best girl though was my dog. She was a German Shepard that my parents bought when I was about a year old and she was my best bud. When I was small we used to crawl into her kennel and sleep together. We'd wrestle and take walks and cuddle endlessly. She was gentle and sweet and fiercely protective. My brother wandered off when he was a toddler. My mom got a call from a neighbor to come get him as they couldn't bring him home because the dog wouldn't let anyone near him. When she went to fetch him, they'd had to baracade them in a field. My brother was happily eating an icecream with the dog sat guarding him. She was a good girl.

In her later years, she developed hip dysplaysia and became paralysed from the waist down. It didn't stop her, she'd drag herself around after us. She must have been in so much pain, so it was a relief when she was finally put to sleep and I'm so glad I got to be with her in her final moments.
I didn't really consider any of the other family dogs to be my dog, none of them really compared and I wasn't in the position to have a dog of my own until recently. Except I wasn't in a position to have a dog then, but Lily chose me so I really had no choice in the matter. I've blatted on about her so much, she really is the love of my life.

If she could make a decent cup of tea, I'd marry her. She's sweet and funny and loves to spoon. And her ears smell like puppies : ) The first time she looked at me like I was her whole world, I realised that there was only one other person (dogs are people!) that had looked at me like that...I broke up with my boyfriend about a week later coz I figured if he didn't love me as much as a fucking animal then I wasn't going to put up with any of his shit.

There's so much about Lily that reminds me of my first dog but they're so different too. As for a favorite, I couldn't choose between them. They're both my girls : )

This made me laugh, good for you! Sounds like your lovely Lily saved you from a douchewad! I've always wanted a dog but never had one, I've had cats and they were all adorable and great characters but cats don't give unconditional love like dogs do!
