The idea for this art was basically that Sam's 'imaginary' world was a total overload to his system, so I had a very clear idea from the beginning that I wanted to have very simple pencil drawings to represent the 'real world' and then Sam's tormenters as manips.

So I did that.

Photo Manips

I used one or more photos to make each figure. I manipped them together and then split each picture up (using the polygon lasso tool to select an area, then copy and pasting each one to form a jigsaw of sorts) and then changing the opacity on each piece to create a fractured, faceted effect, as well as changing the saturation and colour balance to make it look...weird.


        



         




        

Original Pencil Drawings


I'm severely out of practice at drawing so these aren't as nice as I would have liked.
The one of Sam was tricky as I was working from two references and trying to make him look younger...not sure I pulled it off.
The one of Dean was okay except for JENSEN FUCKING ACKLES'S FUCKING FACE...bane of my life! I'm surprised I didn't erase a hole in the paper!
I think the Cas one turned out okay mainly as I just thought I'd quickly sketch something out and then do it properly later but actually, I thought it looked okay! : ) Not overthinking ftw!






            

The Composites


I spent an age moving each of the elements around trying to get a good composition that made narrative sense. This was the result.
Originally, I was just going to have the one image with all the elements in it but looking at them like this a) I really liked the plain pencil layout, and b) the other one was pissing me off. It wasn't until I started spinning them in desperation that I struck on the mirroring idea...which made me happy : ) Also, I quite like that it makes the viewer tilt their head from side to side coz is disorienting, and kinda references how Sam feels. (Can you tell I have a degree in Conceptual Art? Can ya? : )

Dividers for Cas and Sam


Just echoing the same idea as the titlecard...using pencil and photomanips to represent two levels of reality...and stuff.

Font used for the title card is "Beautiful Horror" by 'sanz d'cloudz available from Dafont

Oh Dean took me soooooo long! Most people are defined by their blemishes and inconsistencies...of which he has none! MF! In the end. I thought he looked okay but Oi Vay! How long did he take!

The story just went on my Kindle, so I haven't read it yet, but I wanted to comment on the art because I really like those photomanips. A very interesting, original idea and based on the summary, a good complement to the story. The execution of the dividers is also really good and another very clever idea.

Thank you so much, Hunny! I had fun doing the manips! I really like the aesthetic of joiner pictures and it was a happy accident that they reminded me a little of glass, in a way, which has all kinds of lovely metaphorical stuff going on with it : )

Well done, honey! I just finished reading the story and your art is perfect for it. I really like the mix of pencil art and manips to give it a fractured, two different worlds feel. The concept really works, especially having the images side-on and mirror imaged. After reading the fic it really makes so much sense why the real life parts are soft and monochrome, and the nightmare parts are vivid colour. The nightmares were the most real to Sam, and the real world was faded and colourless.

\0/. Yeah, that thing of Sam's rl being so barren compared to the vividness of the nightmares really struck me hard and it seemed the way to go from the start. I'm so glad you think it works okay. I wasn't sure about having the mirror image like that but it made sense to me in the context of the story and I hoped it would to the readers too. I'm never quite sure if that's the right way to go about it though, whether the image should make sense from the get go or whether being able to look back n hindsight and understand it is better?
