21st Dec: sophiap - what is your favorite thing about this time of year?


I love the bright cold weather when it's really sunny and everything's tinged with frost. I can't bear the rain and mud and sludge (snow lasts about two seconds here before it either evaporates or turns to brown yuck) but when it's dry and sunny, I quite like bundling up and heading out on a walk.

I think my most favorite thing though is that by now, my Xmas is over! I'm not opposed to Christmas, I like the songs and the gift giving and the decorations and the food...it's just I don't do it on the 25th. I have my family and friends over and we do the Xmas meal and pressies and games and drinking but on the 21st or as near to the solstice as I can muster everyone. I'm not Christian so the day has little significance to me and in turn it means I get to spend a fabulous festivus with all my peeps before they have to head out to their respective families for the day proper. So I'm already eating a random selection of xmas cake and leftovers and I'm starting to plan for next year. Normally Christmas eve and day are spent spring cleaning and redecorating with The Christmas Cottage on in the background. It feels like proper time to myself while everyone else is still running around like headless chickens. It's the one time of year when I feel like I'm not playing catch-up to everyone else! x

My go to Christmas movies are Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Bad Santa, The Christmas Cottage and Muppet Christmas Carol.

I also love The Box of Delights which was a British kids TV miniseries, which was so weird and macabre...shape-shifters, child kidnappings, wolves, weird magicians...just very hauntingly festive. If you can find it, it's definitely worth a look.

As for songs...

Nat King Cole is one of my most favorite singers and this song just so perfect and heartfelt...it's just lovely.

I have to say Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is a favorite too but I find it really so very sad. I love Jensen's version of it of course, Judy Garland's probably more, but yeah...it's a little depressing. Probably why I like it : )

I also love Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacCall, Yule Shoot Your Eye Out by Fall Out Boy, and So Much Wine by The Handsome Family as some more realistic expressions of the festive season : )
