It's almost like John's created the catalist that brings about everything, by planting that single, ungrounded thought in the mind of his eldest son; his barely back from the dead, confused, vulnerable son.
The look on Dean's face as John pulls back. So bewildered, so lost, so in need of something he can't express.

It's abundantly obvious during ELAC, the way the brothers dance around each other, how Dean smashes Baby up, rather than talk with Sam; rather than allow the one person he wants to let near, get close. Because how can you kill someone you're so close to, is so much a part of you.

This isn't a spoiler, just a cut to hide my headcanon! x I think in terms of seeing the show in terms of Dean, all the stuff with John is just a foil to show exactly how amazing Dean really is. In my headcanon, the reason John stayed away, the reason that he was so desperate and obsessed with getting YED was because he knew that killing him was the only way to save Sam, that he did in fact have a better handle on what the plan was for the chosen kids than he let on. I think once he started digging around in Hunter circles, there was no way he wouldn't have found out about the Campbells and all the implications of that, in Mary's death.
When he had to make the deal to save Dean, I think he did it knowing full well that he would have to tell him. I think too that as hard as he was on Dean, I think he thought that actually Dean was a better hunter than him and that Sam's best chance of survival would be Dean. I think telling him that he might have to kill Sam was a) because he knew if things got bad Dean would end up with Sam's foot on his neck but also b) a dick move/calculated plan as, what would be the ultimate motivation for Dean, 'Get the demon or the world will end" or "if you can't save Sam, you have to kill him" ? I have a bit of trouble with, of all the stuff that runs up to that moment, all John's guilt about how he has treated Dean, and how he has let him down, saying sorry and how proud he is; when he says "Don't be scared", I just can't get a handle on that. The only thing I can think is about Sam saying about when he said he was scared of the thing in his closet as a kid and his Dad gave him a gun. And now suddenly John is saying "don't be scared"?! I know it means something but I'm just not sure what other than just being fucking frightening!
I thought the look that Dean gives John was amazing, I always think it's like it echos his "is that really you talking" question, he looks like he doesn't even know him. It's utterly devastating. Jensen is so fucking awesome I just can't even!
I think as a plot device, this all worked so well, I can't think of anything they could have done better in that episode (apart from the fucking coffee cup that didn't fall over, ugh!) It's just so good! x
