18th Dec: majestic_duxk - what is your favourite non british main meal to eat?

Oooo, this is kinda hard, mostly as I'm trying to think what constitues a "British" meal. Apart from roast dinners and sandwiches, I'm not sure if anything is really that British...I guess stuff like haggis, jellied eels, laverbread or stargazy pie but really, that's not exactly on the standard British menu either. Mostly we are a nation composed of other cultures, it's just they've been around long enough that we've forgotten that.

So it's all pizza, pasta, curry, stirfry, burgers...stuff like that, none of which is really that British.

I guess for me though, I do like Japanese. Give me some gyoza, yakisoba, or something teriyaki or katsu curried and I'm happy : ) I can sushi and sashimi to a point, which is usually when the texture of raw fish suddenly reminds me I have raw dead flesh in my mouth and it doesn't matter how delicious it is I just can't. And I can't get down with the whole pickle thing they have going on either. But miso with smoked tofu is my comfort food and did I mention gyoza? Fried or steamed I can eat those little darlings until I explode!

Pretty much my main meal of all main meals is stirfry. Nothing fancy, just usually a red onion, red pepper, chicken breast, some peas and noodles all fried up with some soy sauce. I usually eat that 5 days out of 7 because easy and yum.

And omg I'm hungry now...

I only recognize about 6 words in this whole post. It is clear I'm American, and we don't eat things like stargazy pie, no no no we don't, I wiki'd it, no, no, I might have nightmares tonight. It reminds me of Beatrix Potter where the rats steal the kittens and roll them up in dough. Perhaps stargazy pie is Beatrix's muse. omg.

I'm not gonna lie, those jellied eels looked disgusting too, but the way those fish were looking up at you, like "WHY DID YOU PUT ME IN THIS PIE" *shiver* (I love that your meter is genitals*G*)

Toad in the hole, cottage pie, beef hotpot, chicken pot pie, steak and kidney pudding... ;-) Great answer though; you're very adventurous. I don't know what half those things are! Hehe!

xx

Ugh, see none of those popped into my head at all! And they're so obvious! gyoza are kinda dumplings like spring roll type things, yakisoba are fried noodles, teryaki is a soy sauce type thing...it's all really delicious! A bit lighter than chinese with a kind of cleaner taste...although now I'm thinking about dim sum...oh god I'm hungry! x

I want japanese food so bad now! I haven't had it at all since I got here, but I used to have it at least once every two weeks back home! Where do you get the good stuff??

Try seeing if there's a Moshi Moshi, Wagamama or Yo, Sushi! near you x

I've been to Wagamama! I was told the pork ramen comes highly recommended, but that ain't no pork ramen! I had it like two days after I got here and I was quite honestly offended they called that stuff /ramen/. But maybe I'll try the other two. :)

I find their noodle selection truly weird. I had some noodles that were so thick I could hardly eat them. It's a bit trial and error. I like their katsu curry if I remember right. Here though we have so many restaurants and at least three more traditional Japanese places that I'd try first. It's worth just googling to see what's in your area. There might be a little family run place that's way better x

Yeah I've seen one teppanyaki place which also does sushi but its so pricey it makes my wallet hurt just looking at it. Also, funny thing about family run places! When I came here, I thought I'd be okay, because the Chinese population is fairly large and well established. Its true, but their food is also terribly different and laden with MSG. The funny thing about /that/ is even the people from China aren't big fans of it, which means its not just a style thing. AND its so expensive! If I can get fish and chips and peas for three pounds, and you're trying to sell me tofu with instant noodle seasoning for 5.50, you can bet I'm gonna be eating some peas~

I can talk about food forever, clearly. :P

Mmmm, Japanese food. I'm vegetarian, so miso with smoked tofu sounds delicious. :) Stirfry is always yummy.

I always think Japanese is really good for veggie options. They do some really good things with tofu and don't seem to be as fixated on the meat element in dishes like some other cuisines. And yes, stirfry is ALWAYS yummy : ) xx

I'm all japanese fooded out at the moment. I am sure I will recover, but yeah... (although, gyoza!)

I hear you!

Aus cuisine is the same - there is not a lot that is truly 'australian' (well, there are bush foods, and traditional aboriginal things, but I guess I am talking from a white settler point of view). And then, because we so multinational, we eat pretty much everything. but I guess it is a 'fusion' thing.

yeah.

anyway! great answer :)
