Fuck.

I've totally just written myself into a corner. I need the Hive Mind!!

Character 1 is in the ICU. I was going to have the nurse give Character 2 his effects and Character 2 was going to take the keys to his apartment and blah blah blah

But I just fudging realized that Character 1 is the victim of a crime and so all his effects would have been logged as evidence...including his keys..

FFFFUUUUUU!!!!

So, how does...

a) the nurse have his keys, or
b) Character 2 become motivated to go to and/or get into the apartment.

...

GO!

Thank you so much for all the help! : ) xx

*tentatively raises her hand*
Could the apartment be one of those that has a window onto a fire escape, which in this case has been left ajar?

Yeah, i like the idea of the fire escape but I really wanted to avoid him breaking in. He's already on the brink of hella creepy and being able to say "but I had a key" was going to be the justification for the intrusion later.
Although gaining entry through the rear, will amuse Character One no end when he does wake up so...: )

Thank you Hun xx

Spare set from a friend, or a hider key? Someone came and gave him a spare set as they knew he wouldn't be able to get in, or Character 2 knows where the hider key is?

Xx

This is where I've made things so hard for myself. No one that knows Character 1, is aware that he's in the hospital and Character 2 keeps it that way...for reasons.

I thought about the hider key thing but I just cannot see C1 doing that...for reasons.

It's driving me nuts : (

Thank you for helping, Hun. Imma take a shower and hope inspiration strikes : ) xx

In the end I went with door was left unlocked but I think I can work it into a plot point....once I figure out what the plot is : /
It's kinda getting away from me a little : ) xx

Right so the cops took the effects which would have been wallet, phone and keys. Did they also take his clothes? If not he could have had a spare key in the lining of a jacket (shut up, I do it because I've lost my keys so often) which was found as a nurse was folding it.

The keys were overlooked/dropped by the ER staff/paramedics in all of the kerfuffle and not noticed until after the cops left. Or the keychain was broken and although the cops took the keys, one or two were shaken loose and then found on the floor of the area he was first brought into and worked on.

C1's apartment isn't key-locked, it's a keypad, and C2 has secretly watched him enough to know the code.

Yup, they would have taken everything for DNA etc.

His been in the hospital for two weeks, with the cop on his case visiting him so someone would have mentioned it/handed them in.

C2 didn't get his address til much later...

but...

how do you feel about him just going there...and then the door being unlocked? Not burgled, just not locked... and then maybe the keys lying on the kitchen table like he'd just popped out...feasible or a bit too convenient?

i'm already straining credulity like whoa : ) xx

Just FYI... I literally never lock my doors. Even when I go on vacation. Nor my car. So I wouldn't say it's stretching credulity too much for the house to be unlocked.

I don't think it's completely implausible. People forget to lock their doors all the time. I can't count the number of times I've forgotten to lock my apartment door. I'm just lucky it's a security building. Although, they're easy enough to get into by just following someone else in through the main door. I'd run with that. Maybe you could have C2 thinking about breaking in, stressing about it, and then finding the door is actually unlocked and he can't believe his luck.

This could be especially believable if C1 left the apartment in a hurry for...reasons. Lol, not sure what to suggest for the reasons. I obsessively lock every door all the time because I'm uber paranoid, but even I have forgotten to lock up when running out of the house because there's an emergency, or I have something huge on my mind, or I'm really, really late.

Good luck, sugar. I know you'll crack this one. And don't get too hung up, you can always leave it blank for now, skip ahead to C2 being in the apartment just so your flow isn't completely destroyed.

It was so much fun! I feel like I've been run over by a truck and then pummeled by a bunch of rugby players, but it was so worth it! I danced for the first time in a couple of years, I drank, I smoked, and ran amok, and caught up with friends I haven't seen in a long time. Fabulous :)

I think your idea of the door being unlocked is fine - perhaps C2 goes to the apartment intending to break in and finds it already unlocked. And if C1 did just pop out it's plausible he left his door unlocked and his keys (or spare keys) inside.
This sounds intriguing by the way! Looking forward to reading it.

What about a 'hide-a-key' scenario, where C2 has seen C1 forget his keys before and he has one spare stashed somewhere.

I thought about it but C2 has never been there.I did make sure he had a good look around for hidden keys when he got there though so thank you for that : )xx

Also, if C2 is really intelligent, there's this: http://www.memecenter.com/fun/2784441/but-keep-it-in-secret Scroll down and view the third comment from the sherlock fandom on Tumbler.

Alternatively, if C2 has time and patience... many key boxes only have 6 numbers, so there's only 6,666 possible combinations. There's a 50% chance that the correct combo would be one of the first 3,333 that he tried, 25% that it would be one of the first 1,666 he tried, etc. My dad once found a really nice bike lock on a trail, and brought it home. Everyone was teasing him, because it was locked, and he didn't know the combination. We tried, and the combination was the 558th we tried, it took much less than 10 minutes.

OMG I forgot about that (also how cool are the sherlock fandom!)

Does character 2 know character 1? Are they dating/good friends? Could he be the person who character 1 gave his spare key too coz he trusts character 2 more than his neighbours?

This is my issue...they have never met. C2 has seen C1 from a distance but that's it. I went with the open door in the end...I think I can make it believable...maybe...I'll chuck in blow job...that usually distracts everyone : ) ♥ xx

If it works best with Character 2 having the keys for later justification then I'd just rewrite so that the keys either didn't end up in evidence or were released from it. Even if by following strict procedure they should be there, you the writer are the master of the universe and can manipulate those slippery keys into any place you want.

Normally I would but I feel like I had reached my limit of coincidence and happy happenstance. I think magically appearing keys would be a bit too much. I think it worked out, I went with unlocked door...it'll become a plot point if it kills me!
Thank you for the boost though Hun.I forget sometimes that the story is not the boss of me : ) xx

This might be too late -- but how about he has pet hair on his clothing and so whoever *should've* logged the keys with the other effects gave the nurse the keys so the pet wouldn't starve. :)

...even if there is no pet -- it could be a motivation. The pet could have belonged to someone else if you don't want that complication.

I'm in favour of the keypad option - you can often tell which keys are used because they get shiny with being touched so much more than the others, so it would just be a matter of trying a few different combinations of the shiny numbers until he hit the right set (or he knows the combo because of reasons... maybe ICU guy uses that combo for other things which your sneaky boy is privy to)
