I'm in bed but was gonna do this real quick. Self recs.

I was going to put my Xmas Fic I wrote for meus venator - http://alexisjane.livejournal.com/285361.html - coz I really like these guys...but then the challenge is to rec three things!

I've been thinking about Sunday, Maybe Monday a lot - http://alexisjane.livejournal.com/271063.html - probably going to work on it some more, turn it into a full length story. I miss those boys.

And I know it's not technically fannish but I made this pic for my Daniel and Elliott story and I just really love it! - http://alexisjane.livejournal.com/256701.html - I can't use it for promo as I don't have the images rights but oh my heart...I really wish I did : )

Anyway. Sleep now. More tomorrow Xxx

I know I have some Destiel fans on my flist. I'm hoping some of you are on Facebook too.

My friend Catherine Lievens has just powered through Supernatural for the first time and loved it.

She's asking on FB for some Destiel fanfic recs, and I'd really love to be able to violently shake some sense into her point her in the right direction, but it's not my area.

So if you have a minute and a Facebook account and a page of Destiel recs or a good comm, please think about dropping her a link or two. She's lovely.

Thank you! <3 xx

*waves* Just a quick fly-by to say my list of reads for November is up here.

This month has been heavily historical, with some exquisite BDSM, hairy bears, and ex-marines thrown in just for the hell of it.

Already looking forward to next month's selection...although doing this post has made me want to go back and read some of these again!

Onwards.

Miss your faces xxx
alexisjane: (a- Hmmmm)
One of the recurring pieces of advice I got when I was talking to m/m authors at the UK Meet conference in September was that if you want to write in the genre, you have to read in the genre. Like, a lot.

Which made sense, and so that's what I've been doing. Also, in an effort to not ghosttown my writer's blog, I thought I could do a post every month to just list what I'd read and what I liked.

So this is it – My October Reads

There's shifter fic, panty fic, men with guns, gothic romance, Festive fic, dragons \0/ and sci-fi.

The post also clearly demonstrates why I don't ever get anything done : )

So, today has been rather nice!

I won a thing!

This is 100% down to [livejournal.com profile] wings128 who I made the thing for, and I have a sneaking suspicion may have nominated me (Actually...I have no idea! Did you?!) So, that was rather awesome.

And it's no surprise to me that so many of my flisties are on the winners rostrum, coz you guys are just wonderful and so, so talented. Congratulations to everyone : )

And then wings...again!!...posted a lovely rec of my Halloween fic! I wasn't sure anyone would read the weird little thing, so for her to make a post about it is super fucking special to me. Thank you so much, Darling : ) Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] somersault_j too, for making me post it in the first place : )

And then...Lily, who has been super, super sick with kennel cough, actually hasn't coughed at all today and there's been minimal snottage too! \0/ Which is super awesome as I have a hospital appointment on Tuesday and she has to be well enough to go to daycare.

And theeeen, I got to see my neice (not really my neice but the connection is too complicated to explain so henceforth...neice) in the park and she was adorable!! She even let me hold her, despite her going through a super clingy period right now, so that was lovely.

Also, last night for Halloween I watched Hellboy, which I haven't seen in ages and it was fun! I forgot how much fun it was.
And then I read The Tutor by Bonnie Dee...

...which is fucking fantastic! An m/m gothic romance, in which a guy fakes his way into becoming a tutor for twin boys living in a drafty mansion, with their grief-stricken, and coincidentally, handsome father. I really enjoyed it. The writing is fantastic, and the story is brilliant. Dont be fooled by the "Sound of Music/Secret Garden" comparison in the description. It's a ghost story – more Woman in Black than Jane Eyre if you ask me. I genuinely got the shivers at a couple of points...and not just coz of the sexytimes either! : ) But anyway. Not a waste of pennies. I shall definitely be reading it again : )

So, that was nice too : )

Let's hope the rest of the week keeps being nice. I could use it! Love your faces xxx

Having a very slight OTP crisis.

Long story short...I'm reading two WIPs right now, the wonderful Wrapped in Honey by [livejournal.com profile] lady_emebalia which is like crack! About the only diligent thing I'm doing right now is checking my timeline for the next instalment! Incubus!Sam and captive!Dean...it's just lovely.

But then I'm also reading Occam's Razor by [livejournal.com profile] miss_annthropic. It's...well, it's not spn : /

I don't want to break up, it's just... )

This Personality Test.

Hate the either/or type questions.
Surprised I don't live in a hole in the ground, having lost the power of speech...95% Introverted shouldn't be a thing. If I get to 100% introverted, will I cease to exist on this plane of reality? That could actually happen...which reminds me of this...Solid Geometry by Ian McEwan (6655 words - read it. It's fantastic. Fucked up but fantastic)
Also weird as it says I share my profile with William Shakespeare...who I got on the "which writer are you" meme thing! I should get a ruff.

Alex's Personality Type Results

I like crows for reasons...like they ask nicely for stuff...this looks like a jackdaw to me but corvids of all kinds have my heart ♥

And this TEDx Talk.
Come out....we have pancakes.

In other news, I did some work today : ) I also did a bit of housework....AND...started my minibang! (okay, I did cry twice but that's still an improvement!) I'm loathed to say I'm feeling better but today was definitely a better day : ) *hugs everyone*

Inbox is at...muthafucker 875...how?!! *sighs* I will get back to you, I will!! x

First, this...interesting and made me 'hmm' and nod. Potential fic fodder.

15 Things You Don’t Owe Anyone At All (Though You Think You Do) by Jade Small

"Family members, friends, and even total strangers, it often seems like everyone has an opinion on the things we do, no matter how small or insignificant those things might seem to us.

Sometimes people go so far as to ask you to explain yourself for the decisions or choices you make in your own life. You might feel obliged to respond, but some things are really no one else’s business and you don’t owe anyone an explanation at all"

Then this....oh dear God, I laughed, I cried, I puked a little in my mouth...Very important research and just hilarious segue-ways by the presenter!
Very very funny *coughs* I mean, oh dear, poor guy guys people goat...ah fuck it, if you're stupid enough to microwave a melon and stick your cock in it rather than eat it, you deserve the 2nd degree burns! And the things guys have used for sounding...O_o...OMFG

I'm posting my spn_cinema contribution later so it seems appropriate to do this now.

Everyone should post their ten most CRUCIAL CRUCIAL CRUCIAL-ASS movies, like the movies that explain everything about yourselves in your current incarnations (not necessarily your ten favorite movies but the ten movies that you, as a person existing currently, feel would help people get to know you) (they can change later on obviously).

This is really HARD!

1. Star Wars (The first three but esp. Empire) - This will forever be at the top because of thisslightly long winded explanation I gave for the Snowflake Challenge back in January )

2. In Bruges - This is at the top of my "If I had written that I could die happy" list. It's sad, and suspenseful and dark and so fucking funny...It's not the most brilliant thing you'll see, but it has everything I could wish to achieve in a story. It's what I'm working towards.

3. Audition - Sweet and simple and beautiful and scares the fucking shit out of me. I just feel like so much is said with so little. Also...girl power : ) If anyone wants to J2 this for me, I will gladly have your babies!

4. Hercules - Yes, the Disney version. No, I haven't lost my mind.

5. The Dark Knight Trilogy - Love Batman (see Star Wars explanation), especially love this Batman. It's beautiful and dark and Christian and Ken and Liam and Heath and Gary and Morgan and TOOOOM...oh my god I love it!

6. Pride and Prejudice (2005 version) - actually I love all the versions but this one made me love the book. Hated the book since being made to read it at 15. Thought Lizzy was a bitch and Darcy was a dick. This version made me read it differently. Lizzy is book smart but not necessarily people smart and Darcy is just cripplingly shy. When I read it like that, I get what everyone sees in it. I shit you not I watched this once a day for about three months last summer and still listen to the soundtrack at least that much. No. 17 on the 'Reasons that RL men are completely ruined for me' list.

7. Anything that Ray Harryhausen worked on - Scared the friggin' crap out of me. Seriously. But also taught me that reality is truly a place for people with no imagination and that if you don't like it, you can just make your own. It might look crude now but there is an elegance and authenticity to his animation that still blows me away. I'm all for CGI but my heart will always belong to Ray and his plasticine creations.

8. The Black Hole - the foundation for my love of sci-fi. Again, gave me nightmares (all of these things from my childhood seem to be feeding my love of horror which is interesting)

God. Struggling to think of two more...if it were TV shows this would be much easier!

9. Amelie - Same reasons as for 4. but more beautiful and French and No.24 on the 'Reasons that RL men are completely ruined for me' list.

10. The Doberman Gang - *rolls eyes at self* Okay, I saw this when I was a kid and it has always stuck with me. I love dogs and training dogs and I think that this is one of the big reasons why. I have not seen this for a very long time but I remember being so completely caught up in it...It looks ridiculous now but it holds a special place in my heart : )

I'll probably think of a ton of other ones that are more appropriate later but for now that's it. Talk about random : ) x

Day Nine

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 9

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving.

I had a very long list of absolutely-won't-go-there's when I arrived on LJ.
Bless.
I'm so far deepdown wallowing in the dirtybadwrong now it's hard to see back and remember what they were.

RPS was something I was totally going to stay away from until I saw a post quite early on from [livejournal.com profile] meus_venator saying that she was going to be taking down Storm's Eye and to read it before it went. I got total fic anxiety and persuaded myself that an AU didn't count anyhoo...so I read it...and it was just incredible. And the world didn't collapse in on itself so I figured RPS AU isn't such a big deal : ) I'm afraid if you want to read the story, you'll have to buy it! as it's in the process of being published. I can't wait til it is so I can read it again!
And since [livejournal.com profile] king_wizard's When You Touch Me I Die J2AU is definitely on the menu.

The knotting thing bemused me from the beginning. Didn't get it. Not sure I still do but after reading [livejournal.com profile] kinkyheels' To See The View From Your Knees it's not so scary anymore. I don't even know why I read the first part of this but it was just riveting. And everytime she posts one, I can't figure out why I read it but I have to! The characters are just so fab (and Jared is soo evil!) and the whole dog thing is just weird but the story is so good!
And now having dipped my toe in the whole A/O/B universe with [livejournal.com profile] idontwant_candy's Don't Make Me Chase You my squick list has got a whole lot shorter.

The thing at the top of my definitely-not list was underage. And it still is but it seems that beautiful writing trumps pretty much everything.
I don't remember how I got to [livejournal.com profile] bewaretheides15 and Hard-Won inches but I did and it is just a stellar piece of writing and it should squick the hell out of me but it doesn't probably because it's about the gradual changing intimacy between the boys and the deep love and trust that engenders.
And that amulet. Can't look at the amulet in the same way ever again. Definitely a one-off though coz, well just no.

I'm somewhat amused that the big no-no I still haven't faced is Het of all things.
What's that about?
Maybe this year...*gags*...Maybe not x

Stuff I liked this week

I already recced [livejournal.com profile] toratio's new story Turncoat and [livejournal.com profile] somersault_j's very first fic Burn up and Blow Away but goddammit, I'm doing it again!

Real life as been piling up this week so I've been escaping into [livejournal.com profile] homo_pink's Stiffness in the Bones pretty much everyday. There's no point in pretending I'm anything other than a raging fangirl for her stuff but regardless this is awesome. I've read several times to double check that too, so you should give it a go.

I've been doing a lot of running around, betaing ( [livejournal.com profile] skeletncloset finally put out her third installment of her secrets verse this week! Just Wanna be the Boy You Like ) and reading without taking notes so I've not really been paying attention : /

I did add a new Sam&Dean, and a Dean&Cas to the VidRec list on Youtube if you fancy a look. The first one does a bit of pixelly stuff in places but I really love the song and the edit so whatever.

Also I snagged this pic from Pinterest as it made me guffaw like a fool. That's it!  x

Day Five

Day 5

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing.

This is hard and unfair and ridiculous as there are too many amazing creators on here to pick just one...

It's taken me all day to pick someone! I know it says challenge but it really shouldn't be this hard. Still...

[livejournal.com profile] homo_pink

I think I'd seen a couple of her things about when I wasn't reading any fics over 1k so didn't actually read anything until Like a Detuned Radio, which I then read about six times in as many days. I can't remember who recced it but I remember thinking that I would happily bear their children for doing so.

I fell in love with the story, her portrayal of Jared, and once I had read Large enough to Hold a Man...inevitably with her.

I think one of the reasons my brain just clicks with every word, perhaps is our shared love of Stephen King. Her writing shares some of his clarity and deep, well-rounded character based story elements that I love. Plus, coming from a horror writing/reading background I think gives an appreciation for the bittersweet subtext that has become a key element for SPN and J2 particularly.

Also, she can fucking write. Not once have I ever had to re-read anything because I think I've missed something, or had a stray word break the spell of the world she has created or felt that I didn't want moremoremore once that last line has rolled on the screen.

There are some writers on here that make me simultaneously want to chuck my keyboard across the room and never write another word, and absolutely knuckle down and keep trying til I'm half as good as them.
She doesn't make me want to do either.
I would just quite happily sit at her feet and devour every word she writes, like a lotus-eater, content to just drown in her words, excluding all else...until she dies...and then I'd eat her brain x

(However if she ever writes about that scary frigging monkey toy, I'm out!)

I'm hiding.

Today was supposed to be my first day back at normal but the God of Letsfuckeverythinginyourlifeup has unleashed his wrath to mirror the weather. Partly hoping I get swept away by a coastal flood.

So I'm hiding.

Here's stuff I liked

Rumpelstiltskin by [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit is just fab. I love her love of meta, intelligent writing and mad skills on the imagery front. This made me do all kinds of squee as fairytales are my thing (horror writing for kids?...What did they think was going to happen!) and one of the reasons I was drawn to SPN in the first place.

Both by [livejournal.com profile] faege Just read this. It's fab. Really fab. And it made me cry real human girl tears.

A Little Dead Sam to Start by [livejournal.com profile] deep_south Right out of the depths of Special Hell. If you only read one Dean/dead!Sam today make it this. It should be too disturbing to contemplate but, my god, it's beautiful.

Also, this gif set on Ackleholics Anonymous It's cute : )

Also added four (three? four?) new vids to the vidrec playlist on Youtube...the first ones a doozy!

Much love Y'all x

Day Three

Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Sandcastles in the Surf by [livejournal.com profile] ash_carpenter I love this. It was one of the first fics I read and it took my breath away. It's utterly beautiful, dreamy, hopeful and painful all at the same time. I just want to roll around in it and stay there forever.

Benny Knows Best by [livejournal.com profile] the_diggler This is unbelievably filthy and is responsible for leading me into the deep, dark Denny pit of filth which is especially filthy. Filth.

The Ballad of Jensen and Jared  -  Song by seedyapartment  -  Vid by jensenackles1978
It's ridiculous but makes me smile and I'm sure at least a third of the views it's had a from me : )

Apologies for the minimal entry. RL has decided to get horribly real, horribly quickly after the New Year x

Some things I saw I liked.

This is a tumblr post of some of the sound effect subtitles on the show. See if you can spot the sound of the fandom in there : )

This broke my heart.

Tiny Plastic Flowers by [livejournal.com profile] homo_pink killed me. It's so...I can't even. Just read it. I would give internal organs to be able to write like her.

The Holy or the Broken Hallelujah by [livejournal.com profile] pinkwithoutplot is so good. Read parts one and two so you're addicted and then help me nag her to finish it as I just can't stand the suspense! J2 AU priest!kink

Also, on Christmas morning I usually watch It's a Wonderful Life but this year I opted for The Christmas Cottage. I love it and not just because Jared is in it. The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit wrote this lovely piece about it so if you haven't seen it you can check it out here.

I hope everyone survived the Holiday Season mostly intact. Just New Year to go and it'll all be over : ) x
