Peeve

I've been tempted, I admit it, but I work long at hard at avoiding doing this - it does probably take more effort than all the plotting and porning combined to avoid it - which is why it's probably a pet peeve of mine.

I don't actually know many writers that do this in or out of fanfic. But if you're tempted, just...please for the love of God...read this...

So, my friend linked me to this and it sounds like it could be interesting.

6 week online course, 4 hours per week, run by the University of Dundee which is pretty special, I think.

Starting with the discovery of a body and taking you through the forensic identification process.

I think if you want to write anything vaguely police procedural-ish, this could be a great source of information and inspiration.

I'm signed up and have my shades ready to roll!

Starts Monday. Oh, and it's free. And you get a free Val McDermid e-book at the end of it.

Just clickety the pic to go to the page.

MOOCs FTW!! \0/

Let me know if you sign up, and we can help each other with our homework!

RL is kicking my ass. Just babysat for two hours and now all I want to do is sleep! But have to at least attempt some work today.

But anyway.

Just wanted to do a quick pimp for my LiveStream thing, but moreso, the [livejournal.com profile] wedraweveryday comm

If you like doing art or looking at art, come be with us! The aim is to draw something everyday, or everyday you can, and post something. There's tutorials and feedback and all kinds of art related stuff, not necessarily fannish, not necessarily drawing. Just art.

'S nice : )

Anyway, when I have the wherewithall to do a LiveStream, I'll probably just announce it on there coz crossposting is boring. But if you miss it, the videos stay on my channel for a month, I think, so you can go watch them there. I'm happy to take requests/concrit/cookies/suggestions to make the vids more interesting : )

On Writing

I didn't do a Tuesday yesterday because of the fun but gratuitous art deadlines, and dogs believing I've left them for dead and therefore eating all kinds of nasty out of the garbage even though I was gone about five minutes and now are sick and need to poop every hour reasons.

Ep.thought on the ep...cut for spoilers not length : ) )

Anyway, mainly I just wanted to get this out. Been discussing ideas for stories with [livejournal.com profile] deansdirtybb and I was reminded of this portion - swiped and cropped for your reading pleasure - from Stephen King's On Writing. If you haven't read it/don't own it, you should. I thought it was just me but every recommended list and article on being a better writer I've read, leads with this as it's primary recommendation. Plus, it's King, so it's down to earth and a pleasure to read.

From On Writing, Ch5 I think...cherry picked bits at least )

I also saw an interview with him (which I can't find although it might be in the lecture below, come to think of it) where he was talking about stopping his car on a back road somewhere (for gas maybe) and there being a river nearby, wandering over and looking down into the water and thinking "What would happen if I fell in right now? No one knows I'm here. There's no one around to see it. My body would be carried away. I'd just disappear." Or words to that effect.

Anyway, these two things really stuck with me and this is what my brain does now. Everything is a What If... to me. Plus, you throw in J2 and God Dammit my brain just won't shut up. Luckily, he also had this advice too : )

You can watch his whole lecture here, if you're interested. It's about an hour long.

Anyway, I don't even now if that's interesting, or whatever but, yeah...

I don't know how I linked through to this blog but I've been dipping in and out for a bit and I have to say it's pretty helpful on the the writing front.
I like her no nonsense advice about writing generally and writing erotica specifically and the bit below the cut made me guffaw like a fool.

There's some great advice on dialogue, structure and how to write smut.

It's educational and entertaining and stops me from watching that thing I've been watching all day!

Anyway.

In Erotica the basic plot is always the same: "They NEED to have Sex and they'll do Anything to get it!" )

It's Valentines Day and the sky is falling in so I get to stay in and do lots of writing work and listen to the rain.

Yesterday, my good friend came and took me out for lunch, which turned out to be her taking me out for a surprise Valentines lunch, which consisted of her nagging me that I don't date for two hours.
It was very romantic.

Anyway, after three years, I fear she may be finally wearing me down.
So what else to do than make a poll and let you vote on my life decisions!

I have been profoundly bad at dating/relationships in the past and do not trust myself one iota to make a good choice about this and after twelve (oh god) years off the dating scene, I think I could do with some advice.

Here's the song that I listen to every Valentines to help you through the poll. I find it inspirational  ♥ x

END OF YEAR FEEDBACK MEME
my thread here

Apparently, this is a thing and as you're all so lovely to me all the time, I thought it's only fair for you to have a chance to vent your spleens and have at my muse in a way in which she deserves. I already intend to cry myself to sleep* so now's your chance! x

*not really : )

Mentioned this in a comment to [livejournal.com profile] brightly_lit and realised I hadn't watched it in a while.
Some of the best advice on creating, good words used beautifully, all wrapped up in Neil Gaiman's voice, which I could listen to forever.
If you haven't seen it, it's 20 minutes well spent x
